Time for basketball

It's about time.
Basketball season starts later than ever in Union County, which has no non-football schools for the first time. Normally, Parkers Chapel would've been playing hoops for two weeks but, since the Trojans took up football like everybody else, Coach Mark Young and his team has to wait until November to start playing.
Well, it's November.
I'm in the process of making the rounds to watch all the girls teams this coming week. It should be an exciting season.
Certainly, the predicted fall of two-time defending state champion Strong leaves a void at the top of the heap. The Lady Bulldogs lost a starter to graduation and four of the next five players from last year's state title team transferred to Camden Fairview.
Only senior Maranda Parker is back. She's good but can she lead her teammates past all of the opponents that are waiting to get some revenge after getting blasted the past two years?
Parkers Chapel will be a factor and Junction City will be intriguing under new coach Jamie Ball. But, Bearden, which joins the league, should be considered the favorite. The Lady Bears went to state two years ago with pretty much the same squad they have now.
Unfortunately, Smackover won't be in the mix. The Lady Bucks will field their best team in several years but were moved up to Class 3A during reclassification. Their new competition will be Drew Central, England, Harmony Grove, Lake Village and Rison. I don't know much about these teams but Smackover should be in the hunt.
El Dorado gets started under new coach Corey Smith. The Lady Wildcats will also have some new blood, thanks to reclassification. Pine Bluff moving up to Class 7A is great but Little Rock Parkview moving into the 6A-South is not. The Lady Patriots will be tough to handle but, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Lady Wildcats react to Smith's more disciplined approach to basketball. He will try to slow things down and, if it works, El Dorado will be a force down the stretch and could challenge Parkview, Watson Chapel and Sheridan for the crown.
It's going to be a great season.
